Some History

The HSTAT greenhouse was built on the rooftop of our auditorium and opened for use in 2016. Planning began many years ago with our previous principal Phil Weinberg, who is now deputy schools chancellor. Council member Vincent Gentile helped secure $725,000 in the city budget to build the greenhouse along with $250,000 of funds allocated by former borough president Marty Markowitz. The NYC School Construction Authority spent $1.9 million on the greenhouse and reconstruction of the rooftop for additional outdoor gardening space. Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, the club began using the greenhouse to experiment with the hydroponic systems. Now, in spring of 2018, the club has more members than ever and we harvest roughly once a month, selling our produce to students and teachers at affordable prices.
We look forward to many more years greenhouse gardening!
